“I am a big believer that behaviors have a huge effect on results,” says Fred Hassan. In this lesson, Hassan offers advice on how to energize your workforce by developing leaders who make your organization stronger and more productive.
Common behaviors create
- convergence toward common goals
- a sense of trust
- an apolitical environment
- empathy and compassion
Examine company-wide behaviors
- General strategy: Short-term cost-cutting or long-term customer satisfaction?
- Innovation: Reliance on past winners or new product development?
- Sales and marketing: Aggressive selling or customer responsive marketing?
- Human resources: Individualistic, short-term culture or collaborative, long-term culture?
Recognize leadership behaviors
- Key dimensions: Character, self-awareness, emotional connection
- Attitude: Focusing on the present or maneuvering to get ahead?
- Contribution: Proving one’s value-add or passing responsibility to others?
- Attribution: Promoting others’ achievements or usurping credit for oneself?
Identify high-performance behaviors
- Shared accountability: Clear focus on the team, not on one’s self
- Continuous learning: Improvement of processes through training and education
- Business integrity: Commitment to doing the right thing legally and ethically
Evaluate behaviors
- 360 degrees: Check in with an employee’s peers, subordinates and superiors
- Follow through: Let go of people who don’t contribute to the organizational culture
